#UNSEEN Forces: (MCA * STEAM)

In physics, a force (F=m*a) is any interaction that, when unopposed, will change the motion of an object.  As we are immersed in quarantine, we are seeing the power of collaboration that is changing lives.  Businesses are innovating and transforming as they shift their outputs to address the greater needs of the public. Organizations are mobilizing to do their part in giving back to the surrounding and extended community. One inspirational organization we have seen leading the charge in the battle against COVID-19 is the Minneapolis Climate Action (MCA). Their organization has been known for promoting sustainable practices through their involvement with Boomerang Bags, an Australian-based organization focused on reducing our waste by sewing reusable bags for public use.

Urban Design Perspectives volunteered with this organization last year in recognition of Earth Day. Recycling donated fabric and other material to create new multipurpose bags creates an outstanding reduction in the use of single-use plastics and also gives an opportunity to get the conversation started on our individual contributions to this planet. As a conscious organization, the shift from climate to addressing the impact of COVID-19 became a turning point for them when they pivoted from making reusable bags to sewing face masks for healthcare professionals. Their focus on the betterment of the environment in addition to their swift and agile response to the essential worker community is noteworthy.

The architecture profession is also uniquely positioned to serve others for such a time as this where physical distancing is of utmost importance.  The American Institute of Architects has created a guide for reoccupying non-health care related facilities.  It is a great resource that outlines best practices to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public.

We also continue to ask ourselves as public servants how we might be able to address public need in our own way amidst this growing epidemic.  We are planning our second annual STEAM Camp for middle school girls called Camp SEE Architecture. This camp is focused on educating youth on renewable energy and carbon reduction while fostering new skills in drawing, math and critical thinking. We are developing new and alternative avenues to hold the camp in the event that we have to do it remotely. It is a true test of our creativity, flexibility and agility as we introduce climate change and architecture to the next generation.

For many, hidden talent often emerges when unseen forces arise.  A force can cause an object with mass to change its velocity and accelerate.   COVID-19 has certainly come in mass and accelerated across the globe.   Its uncontrollable presence has disproportionately impacted communities of color who have underlying risk factors and comprise a significant portion of workers on the front lines.  While we can’t circumvent its course, we can support essential workers who are unselfishly serving others and empower future learners who will discover cures and create inventions that benefit humankind. When we all emerge, let’s be sure to acknowledge these Unseen Forces, our heroes for today and our hope for tomorrow.
