"What Could Happen Here" - Rebuilding It Right
(Partner with AIA Minneapolis, Habitat for Humanity)
After a tornado on May 22, 2011 hit north Minneapolis, this non-profit grass roots organization was created to provide architectural design assistance to residents who suffered loss and damage. Desired outcomes included the chance to improve the lives of the citizens of Minneapolis through quality design that is respectful of the neighborhood fabric and houses' character, while also serving as advocates for homeowners to ensure repairs meet the quality standards that the homes and the community deserve. Sponsored by AIA Minneapolis and AIA MN, architects and allied professions provided free design support to those who wanted advice on how to rebuild. Our team offered design options to two residential homeowners for rebuilding their homes. As part of the one year later celebration, we met with neighborhood residents to collect their perspectives on rebuilding their community. We presented ideas for neighborhood design guidelines that included options for vacant lots, streetscape, landscape and traffic calming measures.
